Geography
SHS has been working in the villages situated between KHOPOLI and PALI in Sudhagad Taluka, Raigad District, MAHARASHTRA, INDIA.There are about 1,500 households with a population of approximately 10,000 people.
Sudhagad taluka is declared as one of the most backward districts in Maharashtra. SHS especially concentrates its activities in small villages and hamlets which have Katkari tribal population and marginal farmers. Most of these villages and hamlets are situated in the ranges of the Sahyadri mountains where transport facilities are either insufficient or unavailable, roads are very rough or do not exist. The villagers are deprived even of basic amenities. These villages and hamlets are situated at the distance of about 120 kms from both Mumbai and Pune and just 20 kms from Khopoli industrial town. Yet they are far away from bare necessities for leading a normal life. Ghodpapad, Dandwadi, Karchunde, Vave,  Mangaon, Pawasala, Bheliv, Falyan, Vasunde, Mulashi, Kalamb, Dahigaon, Dhokashet, Kansal, Pedli are some of the villages which are spread over between 2 to 15 kms from the main Jambhulpada village.

People

Population of these villages consists of scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and other communities. There are 25 to 30 small hamlets of Katkari tribe, which is considered as a primitive tribe of India. Schedule caste population is scattered all over the area.
Most of the residents, irrespective of their caste and community, are economically and socially backward even though these villages are very close to major cities like Mumbai, Pune and Thane. Tribals adopt to seasonal migration during winter and summer for work since they have no means of livelihood, except during rainy season. Majority of them are landless labourers.
